Small Habits for a Brighter Tomorrow

21 January, 2025

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” – Jim Ryun

Have you heard the saying, “Habits maketh man”? It suggests that the habits we build—consciously or unconsciously—shape who we are and where we are headed in life. This phrase is backed by scientific research: the difference between average performers and top achievers often comes down to consistent, positive habits.

Although a few do spend years fine-tuning optimal productive routines for themselves, habits mostly form as a natural result of our feelings or what’s the most convenient at the moment. The best part of this is that the small, intentional changes to our daily routine can completely change our life trajectory. Think of it as the domino effect—tiny actions leading to monumental outcomes.

So, how do we start building habits that move us toward a brighter tomorrow? Here are some small, practical habits that can make a big difference.

1 . Roughly plan your day ahead of time

Let’s be honest – it’s easy for us to feel overwhelmed by mundane tasks just because we don’t have a plan. When you wake up unsure of what your plan for the day is, it’s easy to lose focus, waste time and feel swamped. Planning your day doesn’t mean having every single detail of your day figured out before the day even starts; it simply means getting your priorities for the day right.

Start with the absolute basics:

  • Decide what is the best time for you to wake up
  • Make time blocks for important activities like work, meals or exercise
  • Choose a reasonable bedtime

This simple structure helps you stay on track, accomplish tasks, and make the most of your day. Plus, crossing things off your list? Isn’t that the best feeling?

2 . Get Moving (even if just a little)

We all know that exercise is the most beneficial activity that someone can add to their routine. So, get moving, and you don’t need to spend hours at the gym to reap benefits.

  • Do 10 jumping jacks in the morning.
  • Take a brisk walk during your lunch break.
  • Try desk-friendly exercises if you’re stuck at a computer all day.

Consistency is key; even the smallest amount of movement can leave you feeling energized and accomplished. Plus, it’s a great way to counteract all those hours spent sitting!

3 . Practice Mindfulness

It’s easy for us to let life pass us by without noticing even a single moment of it, in this fast-paced world. Mindfulness is the perfect solution to this and you don’t have to sit cross-legged for hours, as pop culture depicts it (unless you want to). You just need to be present, even if it is for 10 minutes a day.

Try this:

  • Spend two minutes focusing on your breath
  • Do a quick body scan to check in with yourself, as soon as you wake up
  • Pause and notice the sights, sounds, and smells around you during your morning coffee

Mindfulness brings clarity, reduces stress, and helps you appreciate the small joys in life.

4 . Invest in Yourself

“You are your own biggest asset,” says Warren Buffet, and he’s right. Whether it’s learning a new skill, pursuing a hobby, or simply taking time to rest, putting yourself first isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.

If you had an expensive Ferrari, wouldn’t you spend hours taking care of it? Think of self-care as maintenance for your most valuable resource: you. Explore your passions, spend time alone, and remember to prioritize your needs. A happier, healthier you is better equipped to tackle life’s challenges.

5 . Save a Portion of your Income

Every January 1st, most people make a New Year’s resolution to save more and spend less. This is easier said than done, considering the amount of people who cannot stick to this resolution by the end of the year.

Start small on your savings journey; even saving 2% of your paycheck can add up over time. To make it easier, most banking apps have options that can help you automate the process so that you’re not tempted to spend it.

6 . Pack your lunch

Did you know that buying food accounts for almost 58.5% of total food spending? If you pack your lunch, instead of buying from outside you can save your money and eat healthier. It’s a win-win! Store-bought meals are often more expensive and less nutritious than homemade options.

If a lack of time is the issue, meal prepping on weekends can be your saviour. Not only will you have lunches ready to grab and go, but you’ll also have the satisfaction of knowing you’re taking care of yourself.

7 . Create Morning and Evening Routines

Routines provide structure and can reduce decision fatigue. A solid morning routine sets the tone for the day, while an evening routine helps you wind down and relax.

Your routines do not have to be elaborate. It can be as simple as waking up, brushing your teeth, drinking a glass of water in the morning or washing your face, reading a book and heading to bed by 10 p.m.

The key is to make your routines enjoyable so that they don’t feel like chores; otherwise, you’ll just end up not following through.

8 . Daily Affirmations

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “You are what you think all day long.” Positive affirmations are a simple way to rewire your mindset and overcome self-doubt.

It doesn’t have to be a long and winding paragraph. You can simply repeat phrases like:

  • “I am capable and confident.”
  • “Every day, I’m making progress.”
  • “I deserve happiness and success.”

Science backs this up – affirmations can reduce stress and improve problem-solving skills. So, go ahead and talk yourself into a brighter tomorrow!

9 . Spread Kindness

We are taught to always be kind to others but did you know that helping others isn’t just good for them; it’s good for you too? Acts of kindness release feel-good chemicals in your brain, helping boost your mood and strengthen social connections.

Small gestures, like complimenting a colleague or holding the door open for a stranger, can make a big impact. And who knows? Your kindness might inspire a ripple effect.

10 . Celebrate even the small wins

We often hold off on celebrating the small wins because we are waiting for the big milestones, but life is built on small victories. Completing a task, trying something new, or even getting out of bed on a tough day – all of these are worth acknowledging and appreciating.

Reward yourself in meaningful ways, like

  • Treating yourself to your favourite coffee
  • Taking a break to watch an episode of your favourite show
  • Or simply giving yourself a mental high-five

By recognizing small wins, you’ll stay motivated and remind yourself of the progress you’re making.

A better tomorrow starts today

Building a brighter tomorrow for yourself doesn’t require grand gestures or life-altering changes; it’s about the small, consistent habits you implement in your life daily.  Scheduling your time, practicing mindfulness, moving your body, and spreading kindness are all simple steps that can lead to significant, lasting change.

So, start small. Choose one habit, incorporate it into your routine, and watch how it transforms your life. Remember: brighter tomorrows are built on the choices you make today.
